Midwife Teacher/Preceptor Development
CNH 377 & 378

This course specifically teaches credentialed/registered midwives how to teach student midwives. Many direct-entry midwives learn as apprentices under professional midwives, in both developed and under-developed nations. There is a huge need for this extra development of teaching strategies and skills for midwives who mentor others. The World Health Organization addresses this area as one of the major methods of influencing midwifery and saving lives around the world. We can influence many for Christ in taking this lead. This course could be used in addressing teaching skills for other health care professions as well. In the Midwife Teacher School, the midwives have didactic, as well as clinical sessions to help them develop the needed strategies, enabling them to instruct midwives in the full scope of practice, both for families having normal pregnancies and those who are experiencing an emergency that must be referred to a higher level of care. The Midwife Teacher may be mentoring students who will become certified/registered professionals or those who will solely work under the supervision of another professional health care provider, or health care system. Student Teachers are assisted to master post-basic midwifery skills, and then to learn effective teaching skills for educating healthcare providers. This program addresses the goal of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, and morbidity, by increasing the skills of midwife teachers, therefore increasing the capabilities of their student population. This is an excellent entry point for those who wish to become professional midwife instructors, or to teach community midwives. This course has a field assignment/practicum available with qualified midwife teachers, to give the students guided, reinforced experiential learning.
